The purpose of the research project was to determine the incidence of the achievement motivation theory in strengthening healthy lifestyles in sixth grade students of the IENS of the Municipality of San Juan del Cesar, La Guajira. It was a study with a qualitative approach supported by an action research method; the instruments used were the questionnaire, the field diary sheet, pedagogical session formats, attendance records and evaluation rubrics; the sample of informants consisted of 11 sixth grade students. The main category addressed is achievement motivation through the analysis of the tendency to succeed and the tendency to fail. A pedagogical strategy based on John Atkinson's achievement motivation theory was applied and its effectiveness was evaluated in physical education classes towards the strengthening of healthy lifestyles. The results showed that in the majority of students, motivation is a determining factor for the achievement of their objectives and influences when choosing the type of physical activity they wish to carry out, and they attribute their results in both situations —success and failure— to motivation, interest, ability and effort. Finally, the results are discussed and the conclusions are given.
