Art and Moral in Iris Murdoch: Good Art as a Vehicle for Moral Progress
One of the most important thesis of Iris Murdoch’s moral philosophy is that according to which good art helps humans to be morally better. Despite its importance, the reasons behind this idea are not always clear in Murdoch’s texts. In this paper, I intend to trace these reasons based on a careful reading of some of her texts and to reconstruct the possible arguments of the author. In particular, I propose that, in Murdoch’s view, good art contributes to moral progress for two reasons. First, because it is a training to carry out the task of overcoming fantasy to see reality. Second, because art reveals the complexity of the world, and overcoming fantasy and seeing the world in its complexity are essential to be morally good.
