Illusion of Explanatory Depth, a State of the Art
The illusion of explanatory depth (ioed) is one of the phenomena that has aroused great interest in cognitive science in the past twenty years. It occurs when a person believes he or she can explain a phenomenon better than he or she actually can. The following is a historical reconstruction of ioed studies over the last decades, showing their relevance and importance. First, the background and foundational studies of this research topic will be laid out. Next, the initial research (2002-2015) will be presented followed by a discussion of the questions and solutions of the ongoing ioed studies (2016-2021). Finally, the relationship between ioed, fake news and the Internet will be analyzed.
